Annual Review articles bring together the most important literature in a field and are an excellent place to start research for almost all topics in the biomedical, physical and social sciences.
SciCentral
"This site is maintained by professional scientists whose mission is to identify and centralize access to the most valuable scientific resources online. SciCentral currently constitutes a gateway to over 50,000 sites pertaining to over 120 specialties in science and engineering. " The online resources are organized by scientific discipline or by other topics, such as Women & Minorities or U.S. Govt. Agencies. There is also a Science in the News Section with fulltext articles from newspapers and magazines online.
BioEd: Biology Education Resources
Links to about 200 websites that may be of use to educators, such as sites devoted to teaching biology, and useful to those seeking an introduction to the included subdisciplines: general biology, cellular biology and microbiology, marine biology, environmental science, biotechnology, and health education.
Martindale's -- The Virtual Bioscience Center
Links to high quality scientific websites providing information on amino acids, cloning, genetics, pheromones, proteins. Also provided are reference tools such as dictionaries and online indexes to medical literature. Finally, there are web courses, textbooks, and tutorials for biology, botany, ecology, entomology, marine biology, microbiology, molecular biology and genetics, mycology and protists.
National Academy Press (NAP)
This site, which is maintained by the science publisher NAP, offers books, reports, and publications that deal with new events in science, technology, and health. A lot of information is available, but you will have to search for it.
BioTech: An Interactive Education Resource and Biotechnology Reference Tool
A "hybrid biology/chemistry educational resource and research tool" designed to be useful for students, researchers, and faculty. It offers an online dictionary, links to educational, professional, and literary resources, and is searchable.

Cellular and Molecular Biology
Kimball's Biology Pages
This site is an effective translation of limited parts of the textbook Biology by John W. Kimball. It is essentially a glossary for the book with updated "mini-essays" for some of the terms. The focus is on genetics, cellular and molecular biology. There are many photographs and line drawings.
Cells Alive!
Fun flicks! Animation of a phenomena related primarily to microbiology and immunology. Links to additional sites providing further explanations.
Pedro's Biomolecular Research Tools
Links to highly technical biomolecular websites. Part 1 lists web databases of protein structure, gene sequences, and the like. Part 2 provides links to bibliographic databases for scientific literature. Part 3 includes online course tutorial, dictionaries, and other biology reference sites.
Primer on Molecular Genetics
A text providing an introduction to molecular genetics, with an emphasis on human genome mapping -- prepared by Denise Casey, of the Human Genome Management Information System at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
A Gene Map of the Human Genome
A diagram of each of the human chromosomes showing the density of genes located along the length of each. Out of the 16,000 genes identified, about 50 are featured here in individual essays include illustrations and links to journal literature and other websites. The featured genes are those causing a genetic disorders or contributing to a condition; for example cystic fibrosis, phenylketonuria, breast and colon cancer and obesity.
National Center for Biotechnical Information (NCBI)
Along with information about NCBI, this site offers GenBank, the National Institutes for Health (NIH) genetic sequence database, an annotated collection of all publicly available DNA sequences, and the gene map of the human genome.

Organismal Biology
Biodiversity and Biological Collections Web Server
"Devoted to information of interest to systematists and other biologists of the organismic kind," this site provides lists of web links organized by taxonomic group (botany, ornithology...) or by other categories (societies, museums, images...).

Butterflies of North America
Moths of North America
Both of these websites are created by the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center whose purpose is "to make information on the biotic resources of the Great Plains more widely available to decision-makers, resource managers, scientists, and the public. " Butterfly and moth species from the entire U.S. continent are included here. For each, there is a color photo, information about its life history and conservation concerns, plus a distribution map. The site is authoritative, based on key print resources for this subject.
Amphibian Species of the World
A taxonomic record of currently recognized amphibian species, worldwide.
The Shrew (-ist's) Site
More than most people would care to know about shrews. It includes: photos, skulls & skeletons, tracks, shrew enemies, shrew researches, relatives of shrews. Compiled by Dr. Werner Haberl of Vienna, Austria.
Timber Rattlesnake Homepage
Designed to present factual information on this North American top predator which is often maligned and misunderstood and presently rare or endangered in all its habitats. There are sections on: Home | Status | Life History | Bites | Wisconsin Protection Saga | Recent News & How to Help | Other Links | A Personal Perspective. The site was created by Gary Caspar and Robert Hay of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Ornithology

At this site, you'll find fact sheets, letters from researchers out in the field, a feature on their World Series of Birding team, and bird lists of neotropical migrants wintering in Latin American countries. Finally, there's a "Bird of the Month" feature -- with a photograph and an essay.
DUCKDATA: A Bibliographic Database of North American Waterfowl and their Wetland Habitats
"DUCKDATA provides a comprehensive bibliography of published literature on the ecology, conservation, and management of North American waterfowl and their wetland habitats." The literature includes journal articles, books, theses and dissertations and conference proceedings. There is a search engine for looking for topics of interest.
Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology
